tawk.to gives away the live chat widget itself, with unlimited agents and no seat count, and earns from three things around it: taking the branding off, an AI bot answering from your knowledge base, and hired human agents who answer chats for you by the hour. That last one is unusual enough to be the reason to look. The free product is not a trial and does not expire.
The chat software is free with no seat limit and no expiry, which is the whole proposition. Three things cost money and each is optional. Removing the powered-by badge is $29 a month. AI Assist, the chatbot, starts at $29 a month and has a free tier of its own for low chat volumes. Hired agents, who answer on your behalf around the clock, are $1 an hour, and the company explains that this service is how it funds the free product and learns what to build next.
A site that wants live chat without a per-seat bill, and can live with a small badge in the corner. If your support process needs ticketing, SLAs and reporting that a manager will read, this is not a helpdesk and Crisp or Intercom is the category you want.
Leave the branding on and it genuinely costs nothing, which makes the decision easy for a small site. The $1 an hour agent service is the part worth reading twice, because it is priced unlike anything else in this category.
