Some links on this site pay us. If you click through to a tool and sign up, we may earn a commission from that company. It costs you nothing and it is often the same price either way.

What it does not affect

Whether a tool is listed, where it ranks on a category page, what its review says, or what score we give it. Plenty of tools here pay us nothing, including some we rate above ones that do. We would rather be worth reading twice than earn once.

How to tell

Every link to a tool points at that tool's own address, with no redirect in between. Hover one and the status bar shows you exactly where it goes. We count clicks separately, from the click itself rather than from the URL, so counting never changes where a link leads. Any page carrying a monetized link says so at the top.

The other ways we earn

• A one-time listing fee from companies that would rather pay than display our badge.
• Paid placement, which is always labelled as such and never mixed into an editorial ranking without a label.
• Sponsorship in our newsletter and a single ad slot on the home page.
