Square Appointments runs a booking site, staff calendars and reminders, and takes the payment through Square rather than through a separate processor. The free plan covers one location with no monthly fee at all, and the processing rate is where Square earns instead. Paying lowers that rate and adds the scheduling controls a team needs. Anybody who only wants a calendar link and never takes a payment is paying attention to the wrong half of this product.
Square Free is $0 a month per location with the booking site, reminders and unlimited staff calendars, and charges 2.6% plus 15 cents in person or 3.3% plus 30 cents online. Plus at $49 a month per location lowers those to 2.5% plus 15 cents and 2.9% plus 30 cents and adds the team scheduling controls, with a thirty-day trial. Premium is $149. Above $250,000 a year processed, the rates become a conversation.
Somebody selling their time and taking payment for it, where booking and card processing being one account removes the reconciliation entirely. The free tier genuinely runs a one-person business. Anybody who only needs a link to pick a meeting slot, and never takes money, is carrying a payments platform for no reason and should use a plain scheduling tool.
Do the arithmetic on the processing gap rather than on the features, because the $49 plan pays for itself somewhere around $12,000 a month in online bookings and is a straight loss below that. The free tier is not a stripped one: it is the same booking product at a higher card rate.
