Running the business
Mux is the video layer for somebody building their own product: you post a file or a stream to the API and get back encoding, storage, delivery and a player, billed by the minute. There is no dashboard for uploading a marketing video, and that is the point. Its analytics product measures playback quality for people who already have video working and want to know why it buffers.
The free plan carries a hundred thousand delivery minutes a month for on-demand video, which is a real allowance rather than a trial. Beyond it, pay as you go bills usage with a $20 monthly credit included and all API features available. Launch is $20 a month for $100 of credit, and Scale is $500 for $1,000, with steeper discounts above $3,000 a month. Underlying rates are storage from $0.0024 a minute and delivery from $0.0008 a minute after the free allowance. Mux's own example is that $100 covers uploading, storing and processing a hundred five-minute videos.
An engineer putting video inside a product they are building, where the player and the workflow need to be theirs. Anybody who wants to upload a video and get a link to send should use Vimeo or SproutVideo and never see an API key.
Model your delivery minutes before committing, because delivery rather than storage is what moves the bill on a video anyone watches. api.video and Cloudflare Stream are the direct comparisons, and the choice usually comes down to which player and analytics you want.
