PostHog bundles product analytics, session replay, feature flags and surveys and bills each of them by usage rather than by seat, so a team of ten costs the same as a team of one at the same volume. The first million events each month cost nothing, and that allowance survives an upgrade. Billing limits can be set per product, which is the guard against a viral week arriving as an invoice. The event rates are quoted to five decimal places, so working out a monthly figure takes arithmetic rather than reading.
The first million events each month are free, on every plan, including after upgrading. Beyond that, events start at $0.00005 each and fall through five volume bands to $0.000009. Session replay is priced separately from $0.0050 a recording down to $0.0015, with mobile recordings from $0.0100. Feature flags, surveys and the data warehouse each carry their own free tier and rate. A billing limit can be set per product.
A product team that wants analytics, replay and feature flags without buying three subscriptions, and whose headcount would make a per-seat tool expensive. The free million events covers a small site or an early product completely. Anybody who wants a monthly figure they can put in a budget will find usage pricing quoted to five decimal places harder to plan than a flat plan elsewhere.
Set the billing limits on day one rather than after the first spike, because usage pricing is only comfortable when it has a ceiling you chose. If all you need is page views and referrers, Plausible or Fathom will answer that for a flat fee and far less setup.
