Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
BeFunky is a photo editor first: retouching, collages and batch edits across a folder of images, with exports free on its no-subscription plan. Canva is broader design: thumbnails, channel art, brand kits and short video built from templates sized for each platform, free for most of the editor and templates, Pro at $14.99 a month. BeFunky's Plus tier starts under half that, at $6.99 a month. The choice turns on whether the job is finishing a photo or building a whole page of graphics.

Photo editing and collages in a browser
BeFunky covers retouching, collages and simple graphic design in one browser tab, with the batch tools that make a hundred product shots survivable. It is aimed at people who want an edit finished rather than at people who want layers. Exports work on the free plan, which is rarer than it sounds in this category.

Thumbnails, covers and posts without a designer
Canva covers thumbnails, channel art, carousels and short video with templates that look fine and are quick to change. Brand kits keep a team consistent. Anyone with real design skill will outgrow it, and that is fine.
Our note
Nearly everyone should be on the free plan until a brand kit is the thing they keep wanting. Pro earns its money for teams and for anybody publishing daily; for one person making a thumbnail a week it does not.
Choose BeFunky for photo work done often: crops, colour correction, background cleanup and a batch of product shots processed together. The free plan exports with no subscription attached, and Plus at $6.99 a month opens the full effect and template library. Anybody who thinks in layers and masks will find it thin, and should look at a real image editor instead.
Choose Canva for graphic design beyond a single photo: thumbnails and carousels sized correctly for each platform, a brand kit that keeps a team's fonts and colours consistent, and short video for a title card. Pro is $14.99 a month, more than double BeFunky's entry tier, and it earns that back for a team or anybody publishing daily. One person making a thumbnail a week should stay on the free plan.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
