Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
Animoto and Powtoon both work from templates, but they produce completely different kinds of video. Animoto cuts your own photos and clips to a licensed track, so it needs footage to start with. Powtoon builds whiteboard and cartoon-style animated explainers from a library, with no filming required, and layers in third-party avatars, voices and text-to-video generation on top. Animoto's Basic tier is $9 a month billed annually against Powtoon Lite at $15, and the real choice is whether you have footage to cut or need illustration instead.

Templates that turn photos into video
Animoto is the drag-and-drop end of video making: pick a template, drop in photos or clips, and it cuts them to a licensed track. Nobody is editing a documentary in it. It exists for the promo, the recap and the listing tour that would otherwise never get made, and the free plan stamps a watermark on whatever comes out.
Our note
Canva does much of this and a great deal more for similar money when video is one part of a wider design job. Animoto is the better answer when the output is video and only video, and speed is the whole point.
Animated explainers from templates
Powtoon builds the whiteboard and cartoon explainer style that training departments have used for a decade, and it has since bolted on avatars, dubbing and text to speech from other vendors. Templates carry most of the work. The house style is recognisable enough that a viewer who has seen one Powtoon will know they are watching another.
Animoto is the right tool when you already have photos or video and want them assembled quickly, since templates carry the timing and a licensed track sets the pace. Basic at $9 a month billed annually removes the watermark, and Professional at $19 opens the Getty library for anyone who needs stock footage as well.
Powtoon is the right tool when there is no footage at all, only a script or an idea, and an animated explainer fits the subject better than filmed video. Lite at $15 a month billed yearly caps videos at 10 minutes and 5 exports, and the built-in avatars, voices and text-to-video generation go further than anything Animoto offers. A brand that needs to look distinctive should be cautious of the recognisable Powtoon template style.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
