Owncast

Owncast is a self-hosted live video server with chat built in, so a streamer can broadcast to their own site instead of to somebody else's platform. Any encoder that speaks RTMP points at it, which means the software already on a streaming desktop works unchanged. There is no account, no cut and nobody able to demonetise you. What replaces those things is a server bill and the job of keeping it alive.

The software costs nothing and no paid tier exists anywhere on the site. What it does cost is bandwidth and a machine, and video bandwidth is the expensive kind, so a stream with real viewers is a real hosting bill. That bill is the honest comparison against a hosted streaming service rather than a saving. Setup means installing the server and pointing an existing encoder at it.

A streamer who wants an audience on their own site and has, or is willing to acquire, the skill to run a server. It suits anybody whose content is at risk of a platform policy decision, since there is no policy here but yours. Anybody who wants to be discovered will find that no algorithm sends viewers to a server nobody has heard of, and that is the trade being made.
