Kdenlive

Kdenlive is a multi-track video editor maintained by the KDE community, with proxy editing, keyframes and a configurable interface, and it is free in the sense that matters: no account, no watermark, no export ceiling. It reads and writes whatever FFmpeg handles, which is most of what a camera or a screen recorder produces. Windows, macOS and Linux builds come from the project itself. Support is a forum and a bug tracker rather than somebody answering a ticket, which is the real difference from a paid editor.

There is no price and no pricing page. Kdenlive is free and open source, maintained by the KDE community and funded by donations to KDE e.V. Builds for Windows, macOS and Linux come from the project itself. Nothing is held back for a paid version, because there is no paid version.

Anybody who needs multi-track editing without paying for it, particularly on Linux, where the choice is narrow. Proxy editing makes it workable on a machine that would otherwise struggle with high-resolution footage. Somebody who wants a support contract, or who needs a specific codec certified for delivery, is better served by a paid editor, because here the answer to a problem is a forum thread.
