Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
Powtoon covers both whiteboard and cartoon explainer styles plus third-party avatars, dubbing and AI clips in one subscription, free at 720p with a watermark and then $15 a month billed yearly. VideoScribe does only the hand-drawn whiteboard style, but does it more deeply, with a large library of drawn assets and timing controls matched to a script, no free plan at all, from $12.50 a month billed annually for five downloads a month. Powtoon is the broader, more general tool with a free way in; VideoScribe is the specialist for one specific look, priced by how many finished videos you actually export.

Animated explainers from templates
Powtoon builds the whiteboard and cartoon explainer style that training departments have used for a decade, and it has since bolted on avatars, dubbing and text to speech from other vendors. Templates carry most of the work. The house style is recognisable enough that a viewer who has seen one Powtoon will know they are watching another.

Whiteboard animation, drawn on as you watch
VideoScribe makes the hand-drawn explainer where a marker fills the frame while a voice talks over it. That format is narrow and VideoScribe is the tool that does it properly, with a library of images and the timing controls to match a script. Download limits are per plan, so the cheap tier is five finished videos a month.
Our note
If you want whiteboard animation, this is the tool that does it, and the five-download cap on the cheap plan is the only thing to check against how you work. Doodly and its imitators cover the same ground; VideoScribe has the better asset library.
Pick Powtoon if you want more than one animation style available, or the third-party AI avatars and voices matter. Free covers a watermarked 720p test, and Lite is $15 a month billed yearly once that is not enough.
Pick VideoScribe if the hand-drawn whiteboard look specifically is the format, since it is built for exactly that and nothing else. There is no free plan, so start with the seven-day trial of the full product, and watch the download cap rather than the video length: five finished videos a month on Lite at $12.50, since a video only counts once you export it.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
