Running the business
Plausible is $9 a month for 10,000 pageviews on one site, run entirely as a hosted service with no self-hosting price given. Umami gives away a free Hobby cloud plan with six months of retention, then $20 a month for a million events on Pro, but the whole software is open source and can be self-hosted for nothing beyond the server it runs on. The feature sets land close together. The real question is whether you want to operate the analytics yourself, and only one of these lets you.

Privacy-first analytics without cookies
Plausible answers what a Google Analytics dashboard takes four clicks to answer, on one page, without cookies or a consent banner. The script is a fraction of the size, which shows up in a page speed score. There are no user-level reports at all, so anybody who needs to follow one visitor around is in the wrong tool.
Our note
Not running a consent banner is a saving the price does not show. No cookies means no banner and no consent records to keep, and on a small site that is worth more than the gap between $9 a month and free analytics.
Open source site analytics with no cookie banner
Umami counts visits without cookies or personal data, which is what keeps a consent banner off the front of a site nobody came to for a consent banner. The whole thing is open source, so it can be self-hosted for nothing on hardware you already pay for, and the cloud plan exists for people who would rather not. Events are the billing unit above the free tier. The dashboard is deliberately one screen.
Our note
Choose Plausible if you want a hosted dashboard with no server of your own to think about: $9 a month covers 10,000 pageviews, rising to $19 for Business with funnels, ecommerce attribution and a Stats API. There is no free plan, only a 30-day trial, and no self-hosting price is offered here the way Umami provides one. The code being public is a transparency point rather than an invitation to run it yourself at this pricing.
Choose Umami if you already run a server and would rather pay nothing than pay a monthly bill: the open source software self-hosts for free, and its own listing says the decision against Plausible comes down to exactly that choice. The hosted Hobby plan is free for six months of retention, and Pro is $20 a month for a million events, with overage priced simply at $0.00003 each rather than in steps. Anybody not comfortable running a server and a database should stick to a hosted option like Plausible.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
Self-host it if you already run a server, because the software is the same and the cloud plan is convenience rather than capability. Against Plausible the feature sets are close enough that the decision comes down to whether you want to operate it yourself, and Umami is the one that lets you.
