Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
OBS Studio is free, open source software that does everything a paid streaming tool does, with no paid tier, no watermark and nothing held back, provided you are willing to spend an evening learning a settings panel with no guidance attached. Restream takes one feed and pushes it to up to eight platforms at once with every chat pulled into one window, free for two branded channels and then $19 a month for three without the branding. OBS's own listing names Restream directly: anybody who wants to be live in ten minutes should use it instead of OBS. The trade is time against money: OBS costs nothing and demands an evening, Restream costs from $19 a month and demands almost none.

Free and open source streaming and recording
OBS is what most of the streams you watch are running, and it costs nothing because it is a volunteer project rather than a business with a free tier. Scenes, sources, filters and a real audio mixer are all there, along with plugin support. Nothing about it is friendly on the first evening, and the settings that decide whether your stream looks good are the ones with no explanation next to them.
Our note
Every paid streaming tool in this catalog is, in part, selling you an escape from OBS's settings panel. That is a real thing to buy if your time is worth more than the evening. If it is not, OBS does everything they do and costs nothing.

Stream to eight platforms from one encoder
Restream takes one video feed and pushes it to YouTube, Twitch, TikTok and the rest at once, then pulls every chat back into one window so a host can read them all. The free tier does two destinations, which is enough to test whether multistreaming suits your show. Recording storage clears after fifteen days on the cheaper plans.
Pick OBS Studio if your time is worth less than a subscription, or you are on Linux, the one platform none of the paid tools here reach. It is free forever with scenes, filters, a real audio mixer and plugin support, and by its own account it does everything the paid tools do, just without the guidance.
Pick Restream if being live quickly across several platforms at once matters more than saving the subscription: one feed reaches YouTube, Twitch, TikTok and more simultaneously, with every platform's chat in one window. Free covers two branded channels, and Standard at $19 a month removes the branding and adds a third. Watch for the clips add-on, priced separately on every tier, which is easy to miss when comparing the two.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
