Running the business
Gumroad takes a flat 10 percent of every sale, no plan and no monthly fee. Paddle charges 5 percent plus 50 cents per checkout as merchant of record, handling sales tax and VAT registration across borders, though anything priced under ten dollars is quoted separately rather than fitting the standard rate. Pick Gumroad for simplicity on a first product. Pick Paddle once customers are spread across countries and the tax paperwork is the real cost.

Sell digital products with almost no setup
Gumroad is the fastest way to put a file behind a payment link. No store to build, no plan to choose, and a flat 10 percent on every sale. That rate is high once you are doing real volume, which is when people usually leave.
Our note
Start here, and do the arithmetic every quarter. The moment 10 percent is more than a competitor's monthly fee plus a lower rate, move. Until then nothing is simpler.
Merchant of record for digital products
Paddle acts as the merchant of record, meaning it sells your product to the customer and then pays you, taking sales tax registration and remittance off your desk entirely. That is the whole difference between it and a plain card processor, and it is why software sellers outside the United States end up here. One rate covers payments, billing and tax. Products under ten dollars are quoted separately.
Our note
The extra two points over Stripe buys you out of tax registration, which is worth it the moment you sell across borders. Lemon Squeezy is the same company at the same headline rate with a lighter setup, so pick that one unless you need Paddle's billing depth.
Pick Gumroad for a first product, an occasional release, or anybody who would rather pay per sale than manage a second account. The fee is a flat 10 percent, covering payment processing, with nothing charged in a month with no sales.
Pick Paddle once you are selling software or digital products into more than one country, especially the EU and UK. The fee is 5 percent plus 50 cents per transaction, cheaper than Gumroad's flat rate above roughly ten dollars a sale, and it comes with cross-border sales tax registration, remittance and fraud protection built in. Read the pricing page before listing anything under ten dollars, since those are quoted separately rather than charged the standard rate.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
