Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
ClickUp's free plan holds unlimited members, with $7 a user a month billed yearly once you need the paid features. monday.com's free plan stops at two seats, and its paid tier starts higher at $9 a user a month billed yearly, or $12 month to month, sold in seat blocks rather than one at a time. Both turn a board into tasks, documents and dashboards; the free plan is where they differ most, since ClickUp's holds a whole team and monday's does not.

Docs, tasks and dashboards in one place
ClickUp tries to be the only work tool a team opens, and mostly manages it: tasks, documents, whiteboards, goals and dashboards all live together and cross-reference. The cost of that reach is a settings screen that takes a weekend to understand. Automations are metered per plan, which is what pushes a growing team off the free tier.
Our note
AI is a separate $9 per user a month, sitting on top of a $7 seat. That more than doubles the bill, and it is easy to miss when the comparison with Notion gets settled on the headline price.
Boards you can shape into whatever the work is
monday.com is a work platform whose boards can be bent into a content calendar, a sponsorship pipeline or a client tracker without writing anything. Columns carry types, automations fire on a status change, and the views on top of the same data are what make it readable to somebody who did not build it. The free plan is capped at two seats, which rules out most teams and suits a solo operator well. Paid plans are billed per seat with a minimum seat count, so the real entry price is higher than the headline.
Buy ClickUp if the team is bigger than two people and you want to stay free as long as possible: unlimited members on the free plan is not something monday.com offers at all. Expect a real settings learning curve once you move past the basics.
Buy monday.com if the columns-and-automations style of board suits how the team actually thinks, and two seats free is enough to test it before seats are sold in blocks. It is $2 a seat a month more than ClickUp at the equivalent annual tier, and unlimited free viewers on paid plans are a genuine advantage for showing a client progress without giving them a seat.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
