Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
Circle hosts a full community, spaces, courses, events and live streams, under your own branding, from $89 a month plus a transaction fee that falls from 2 percent to 0.5 percent. NodeBB is a threaded forum in the older sense, free to self-host under the GPL or hosted from $20 a month for 50,000 pageviews, with unlimited staff and every feature on every hosted tier, so its ladder tracks traffic rather than capability. Circle suits members expecting a feed and notifications on their phone; NodeBB's own guidance says exactly that, and points toward Circle for it.

Community software that looks like yours, not ours
Circle gives you spaces, events, courses and live streams under your own branding and domain. It is the more configurable answer to Skool, and the price reflects that. Worth it once a community is paying for itself.
Our note
The right answer when the community has to look like it belongs to you, and an expensive one before that is true. Against Skool it is more money and more control, which is the entire difference between them.
Only on this side
Forum software you can host yourself
NodeBB is forum software in the old sense, with categories and threads, built on Node.js and released under the GPL. You can run it on your own server for nothing, or pay NodeBB to host it and keep the plugins and backups somebody else's problem. Hosted plans are sized by pageviews rather than by seats, so a busy community with three moderators costs the same as a quiet one with thirty.
Pick Circle if the community needs to feel like an app: a feed, courses, events and live streams under your own domain. Professional is $89 a month plus a 2 percent transaction fee that falls as the plan rises. It is a hosted product throughout, with no self-hosted option at any price.
Pick NodeBB if the value is a searchable archive that search engines can index for years, categories and threads rather than a feed. Self-hosting is free and genuine, not a crippled edition, and hosted plans start at $20 a month for 50,000 pageviews with every feature included from the cheapest tier. Its own guidance is blunt that members expecting notifications on their phone will find it quiet and dated.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
Our note
Take the self-hosted route only if somebody on your side is comfortable keeping a Node application patched. Otherwise the $20 plan is cheaper than the hours, and it is the same software either way.
