Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
Artbreeder mixes and nudges existing images for portrait and concept work, with credits from $7.49 a month and a slower free path once they run out. Playground AI puts several image models behind one editor and adds the layout tools a poster or thumbnail needs, so the picture never has to leave for another app, at $15 a month or $12 billed annually. Its free plan generates but carries no commercial licence at all, which is the real gate rather than the credit count. Pick based on what happens after the image is made: Artbreeder hands you a picture, Playground hands you a finished layout with rights attached once you pay.

Images made by mixing other images
Artbreeder works by crossing and nudging images rather than by writing a prompt and hoping, which suits character and portrait work where you want the next version to be nearly the last one. Splicer mixes two pictures, Collager builds from rough shapes you place yourself. Credits meter the fast rendering, and the slower free path stays open when they run out.
Our note
This is the rare image tool where the interface is the product and the model is incidental, so judge it on whether the mixing metaphor suits how you work. If it does, nothing else feels like it; if it does not, no amount of credits will help.
Image generation with design templates
Playground puts several image models behind one editor and adds the layout tools a thumbnail or a poster needs, so the generated image does not have to leave for another app. Free accounts generate at a slower queue and get no commercial licence, which is the line that decides whether it is a toy or a tool. Paid credits are counted per generation across the premium models.
Pick Playground AI if the output needs to be a finished poster, thumbnail or social image rather than a raw picture, since text and composition happen on the same canvas the image was generated on. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 billed annually, and is what actually adds a worldwide commercial licence; the free plan generates but grants no rights to publish with.
Pick Artbreeder if you are working a single image through many small versions and have no layout to build around it. Starter credits are $7.49 a month, cheaper than Playground's Pro tier, and Splicer or Collager carry an image from one version to the next without leaving for a design canvas. Anybody who needs a poster or thumbnail ready to publish, not just a picture, is better off paying Playground's $12 and getting the commercial licence that comes with it.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
