Making the work
Growing an audience
Running the business
Ahrefs is the broad suite: backlink index, Content Gap and site audits from $129 a month, priced for a business with no trial and no discount ever. SpyFu answers one question cheaply instead: what has a competitor ranked for and paid for, with more than a decade of history, from $39 a month for Basic. Its own editorial note is direct about the trade: pair SpyFu with a free rank tracker rather than treating it as a replacement for a full platform like Ahrefs.

Backlink and keyword data at full depth
Ahrefs runs its own crawler, which is why its backlink index is the one other tools get compared against, and why the keyword data goes deeper than the free alternatives. Site Explorer and Content Gap are what most people open it for. It is priced for businesses rather than for individuals, and the company states outright that it never discounts.
Our note
Between this and Semrush the split is old but holds: Ahrefs for backlinks and content research, Semrush for advertising data and rank tracking breadth. Pick on which half of the job is yours, because paying for both is rarely worth it.
Every keyword a competitor has bought or ranked for
SpyFu is built around one question: what is the other site doing. It keeps more than a decade of history on which keywords a domain ranked for, which ads it ran and what it paid, which is the part the general SEO suites treat as a side feature. For research on a competitor rather than maintenance on your own site, it is the cheaper specialist.
Our note
Choose Ahrefs if the job is broad: backlink audits, content gaps and site health alongside competitor research, for $129 a month at Lite with no trial and no discount, ever. It is the full platform SpyFu's own listing says it is not trying to replace.
Choose SpyFu if the actual question is what a competitor is doing: which keywords it ranks for, which ads it runs and what it pays, going back more than a decade, for $39 a month at Basic with API access included at that price. It does not do site audits or backlink monitoring, so pair it with a free rank tracker for the rest rather than expecting one tool to cover both jobs.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
SpyFu is the cheap way to answer one question well: what is the competition ranking and bidding on. Pair it with a free rank tracker rather than treating it as a replacement for a full SEO platform.
