Running the business
Ahrefs and SE Ranking both open at $129 a month, which makes this a real comparison rather than a budget one. Ahrefs spends that price on Site Explorer and Content Gap, backed by the backlink index other tools benchmark against, with no trial and no discount ever. SE Ranking spends the same $129 across rank tracking, keyword research, backlinks and site audits in one login, built for an agency that needs white-labelled reporting, with a 14-day trial to look before paying.

Backlink and keyword data at full depth
Ahrefs runs its own crawler, which is why its backlink index is the one other tools get compared against, and why the keyword data goes deeper than the free alternatives. Site Explorer and Content Gap are what most people open it for. It is priced for businesses rather than for individuals, and the company states outright that it never discounts.
Our note
Between this and Semrush the split is old but holds: Ahrefs for backlinks and content research, Semrush for advertising data and rank tracking breadth. Pick on which half of the job is yours, because paying for both is rarely worth it.
The full SEO toolkit at a smaller price
SE Ranking does rank tracking, keyword and competitor research, backlink checks and site audits, and prices them well under what the two market leaders charge for the same list. It has since added tracking for what the AI answer engines say about a brand. Agencies use it because reporting and white labelling are built in rather than sold on.
Our note
Choose Ahrefs if the backlink index has to be the deepest one available, and Site Explorer or Content Gap is the actual daily tool. Lite is $129 a month with no trial and no discount ever, so the free tier, Site Explorer and Site Audit on a site you verify, is the only look before committing to that price.
Choose SE Ranking if an agency needs the whole toolkit, rank tracking, keyword research, backlinks and audits, under one login with white labelling built in rather than sold as an upgrade. The entry plan also runs $129 a month, with a 14-day trial and no card required. Its own editorial note is candid that the add-on list, an agency pack at $69 a month among them, is where the saving against Ahrefs and Semrush creeps back, so price those in before assuming it is the cheaper choice.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
SE Ranking is what you buy when Ahrefs and Semrush are right and also twice the price. The add-on list is where the cost creeps back, so price the agency pack in before comparing.
