Running the business
PayPal is a general payment processor: a business account with no monthly fee, buyers paying by balance, card, Venmo or pay-later, at rates from 2.29 percent up to 4.99 percent depending on the method. Tebex is built for one audience only, game servers selling ranks and cosmetics to their own players, at a flat 5 percent with no monthly cost on the entry tier and billing handled automatically. PayPal works for almost any seller. Tebex only makes sense once there is a server and a player list to sell to.

Card and wallet payments with no monthly fee
PayPal charges nothing monthly for a business account and takes its money on each transaction, which is what makes it the default for anybody whose income arrives unevenly. Buyers can pay with a PayPal balance, a card, Venmo or a pay-later option without a merchant account of their own. The rate depends on how the money arrives rather than on a plan, and receiving from another country adds a percentage on top. Its dispute process is the part sellers complain about, and it is worth reading before it matters.
Our note
Use this as the second payment option rather than the only one, because acceptance is its real advantage and the rate is not competitive against Stripe at volume. Read the dated fee schedule rather than an article about it, since the rates on this page carry a revision date and most summaries elsewhere do not.
Only on this side
Game server monetization at a flat five percent
Tebex sells ranks, cosmetics and subscriptions to the players on a game server, and handles the billing, renewals and plan changes that a community running its own payments ends up doing by hand. The entry tier has no monthly cost and takes a flat five percent instead, so a quiet month costs nothing. Store layouts are customisable and the checkout is theirs rather than a redirect somewhere else. Anybody outside game communities is the wrong audience, because everything here assumes a server and its players.
Choose PayPal if you are selling anything general to the public and want a payment brand buyers already trust: no monthly fee, rates from 2.29 percent for a QR payment to 4.99 percent for pay-later, and Venmo and pay-later options alongside cards. It has nothing built for a game server: no in-game delivery, no rank or cosmetic catalogue, no player list to sell against. A community selling to its own players is better served by Tebex's purpose-built billing.
Choose Tebex if you run a game server or community selling ranks, cosmetics or memberships to your own players: a flat 5 percent on the entry tier, no monthly cost, with billing cycles, renewals and plan changes handled automatically and checkout staying on your own store. Its rate can beat PayPal's card and pay-later rates for that specific audience, but everything here assumes a server and in-game delivery, which most sellers do not have.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
Our note
The flat 5 percent is the number to hold against alternatives, because it does not move with volume and most competitors in this space negotiate rather than publish. Work out what the paid tier costs in your own currency before upgrading, since the page quotes it in pounds and the exchange rate is doing part of the pricing.
