Running the business
Matomo can be self-hosted free for full data ownership, or run on Matomo Cloud from $26 a month for 50,000 hits, with heatmaps and session recording sold as add-ons and real depth to configure. Simple Analytics is deliberately minimal, one page with no configuration, free for a hobby site that keeps its badge visible, then $20 a month for 100,000 pageviews. Matomo trades complexity for depth and the option of a self-hosted free tier. Simple Analytics trades depth for a dashboard that needs no setup and covers more traffic per dollar once you do pay.

Web analytics you can host yourself and keep
Matomo answers the same questions as the analytics everybody already runs, with the difference stated on the page: the data belongs to whoever installs it. Two ways to run it sit side by side, a cloud subscription priced on monthly hits and an on-premise build that costs nothing to license. Heatmaps and session recordings are sold as additions rather than bundled. Self-hosting means owning a server and the upgrades that come with it, which is the real price of the free option.
Our note
Take the cloud plan unless somebody on the team already runs servers, because the free version's cost is measured in maintenance rather than money. Compare against Plausible and Fathom on hits rather than features, since all three answer the same questions and only the pricing shape differs.

Simple Analytics is one dashboard with no setup behind it, aimed at somebody who wants to know what people read and has no intention of building funnels. No cookies, no consent banner and hosting inside the EU are the three things it leads with. Pageview volume sets the price and extra users cost the same again each. Hobby sites are free if the badge stays on the page.
Pick Matomo if you want maximum feature depth and are willing to either run a server for free or pay for the convenience of Matomo Cloud. Twenty six dollars a month covers 50,000 hits, with heatmaps and session recording available as paid extras most simple tools do not offer at all.
Pick Simple Analytics if a one-page dashboard with no configuration is what you actually want, and a visible badge is a fair trade for a free hobby site. Twenty dollars a month covers 100,000 pageviews once you outgrow the free tier, roughly double what Matomo Cloud gives at a similar price, though the feature set stays deliberately plain throughout.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
Our note
The per-user price matching the base price is unusual and makes this expensive for a team of three, so it is at its best for one person. The free hobby tier is a genuine offer rather than a trial, and for a personal site the badge is a fair trade.
