CapCut is a free vertical video editor: auto captions, trending templates and an export with no watermark or length cap, with Pro from $9.99 a month for effects and cloud space. Captions has no free tier at all: Max is $24.99 a month for 500 credits, generating B-roll, music and even an AI actor built from a script or a digital twin of the presenter. CapCut runs on a phone, a desktop and the web; Captions is iOS only, and its own brief says the prices apply to iOS specifically. One is a free general editor for short-form; the other is an expensive, narrow tool for talking-head video shot and posted from a phone.

Free vertical video editor from the makers of TikTok
CapCut is free, runs on a phone or desktop, and every trending template lands here first. Auto captions are quick and accurate. Read the licence terms before using it for client work.
Our note
The best free video editor there is, with a caveat that has nothing to do with the software: it is owned by ByteDance, and the terms you agree to about your footage are worth ten minutes of reading before a client project goes through it.
AI editing for talking-head video on iPhone
Captions edits the kind of video where somebody talks to the camera. It cuts the pauses, animates the subtitles and can generate the B-roll, music and sound effects that go around what you actually shot. The AI actor feature produces footage of a presenter from a script, either an invented one or a twin of you. Its pricing covers the iOS plans and the page says so rather than leaving you to find out.
Our note
This is the strongest of the phone-first AI editors and the least useful if you already own a desktop workflow. Treat the credit allowance rather than the monthly price as the real limit.
Take CapCut for general vertical video: cutting, captioning and templating a TikTok, Reel or Short on whatever device is nearest. The free editor already exports without a watermark or a cap, and Pro from $9.99 a month adds effects and cloud space on top. It runs on the web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, so the project follows you between a phone and a desktop.
Take Captions specifically for talking-head video shot and edited on an iPhone, where its AI can cut pauses, generate B-roll and music, and even build an AI actor from a script. There is no free tier: Max is $24.99 a month for 500 credits, and the credit allowance is the real limit to watch, not the sticker price. Its own brief admits it is the least useful option for anybody who already has a desktop editing workflow, which describes what CapCut offers instead.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
