Blender is a full 3D application, free under the GPL for any use including commercial work: modelling, sculpting, simulation, rendering and video editing in one file, on Windows, macOS or Linux. Cavalry is narrower and flatter: procedural 2D motion graphics, where shapes follow generators, behaviours and data instead of keyframes, so a hundred elements move on one edit. It is free for individuals on macOS and Windows only; studio and commercial use is priced separately and not published. Both cost nothing to start; what differs is the shape of the work and the platforms it runs on.

3D, motion and compositing, free forever
Blender models, animates, simulates, renders, composites and cuts video, and the Blender Foundation gives all of it away under the GPL with no tier above it. For motion graphics it is the free answer to a monthly subscription, and the ceiling is the artist rather than the licence. The learning curve is what it costs instead, and that is a real price.
Our note
The honest comparison is not against a cheaper subscription but against time: Blender costs nothing and asks for weeks. If motion graphics is a recurring part of the work that trade is worth making, and if it comes up twice a year it is not.
Only on this side
Procedural 2D animation, free for individuals
Cavalry animates by rules rather than by keyframe: shapes driven by generators, behaviours and data, so a hundred elements move together without a hundred edits. Motion designers use it for the work that would be tedious anywhere else, and it exports to the formats a video timeline expects. The company states plainly that individuals pay nothing. Coming from a keyframe tool, the model takes a while to click, and then it is hard to leave.
Choose Blender for any work that needs real three-dimensional space: modelling, sculpting, simulation, rendering, or motion graphics built in 3D rather than 2D, under a GPL licence that never restricts commercial use or asks a studio to pay separately. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and the real cost is the time spent learning it, worth paying for a deep or recurring need for 3D.
Choose Cavalry when the work is flat and repetitive: title sequences with many elements, data visualisation, anything where one edit should move fifty objects instead of fifty edits moving them one at a time. It is free for individuals on macOS and Windows, with no published price for studio or commercial use, so confirm your status before building a client pipeline on it. Coming from keyframe animation, budget time to learn the procedural model; a single moving logo will not show what it can do.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
Our note
The free licence removes the only reason not to try it, so the real question is whether the procedural way of thinking suits your work. Give it a project with repetition in it, because a single moving logo will not show you anything After Effects does not already do.
