AWeber's free plan is capped by subscriber count: 500, with automations included. Mailercloud's free plan is capped by volume instead: 12,000 emails a month, no card required, with no stated subscriber limit. One rewards a small list that mails often. The other rewards a bigger list that stays under the monthly send cap, at the cost of a plainer tool with ordinary reporting.

Email marketing with a free plan that lasts
AWeber has been sending newsletters since before most of its competitors existed, and it shows in both directions: the deliverability is dependable and the interface is dated. The free plan runs to 500 subscribers with automations included, which is more than most rivals give away. Its ecommerce feature charges a small percentage of each sale on the cheaper plans.
Our note
AWeber's free plan holds 500 subscribers with the automations switched on, twice what MailerLite gives away, so it suits a list that needs sequences before it needs size. The editor is the part that shows its age.
Twelve thousand free emails every month
Mailercloud gives twelve thousand emails a month on a free plan that needs no card, which is one of the larger permanent allowances in this category. Above it, a single cheap tier lifts the send limit rather than adding features. A separate email API is sold beside the marketing product for anybody who needs transactional sending too. The list-management and reporting tools are ordinary rather than clever, and the free allowance is the reason to be here.
Pick AWeber if automations and a fuller feature set matter more than raw send volume. Free covers 500 subscribers with automations, landing pages and forms included, and paid tiers start at $12.50 a month billed annually.
Pick Mailercloud if the list is bigger than 500 and mostly needs to be mailed within a monthly cap rather than run through automations. Free covers 12,000 emails a month with no card, enough for around three thousand subscribers mailed weekly, and the first paid step is $10 a month for unlimited emails at that same contact band. The tools and reporting are plainer than AWeber's, the trade for the bigger free allowance.

Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
Our note
The free allowance is the reason to look, and it is larger than Mailjet's or MailerLite's on emails a month. Check the contact bands before growing, because the price moves on contacts once you are paying even though the free tier is measured in sends.
