Shaded rows are where the two answers disagree and both listings have answered. A row where one side has not stated a fact is left plain, because silence is not a difference.
Write and typeset a book for one payment
Atticus is a writing app and a book formatter in one, which is the pairing self-published authors otherwise buy twice. It runs in a browser and offline, so a manuscript is not stranded by a bad connection, and it exports files the retailers accept. One payment covers unlimited books and there is no subscription behind it.
Our note
The comparison people actually make is against Vellum, which costs more and is Mac only. If you are on Windows this is the answer by default; on a Mac the question is whether Vellum's output is worth roughly twice the money to you.
Draft a manuscript with AI on the first pass
Squibler writes long-form drafts, holding characters, plot and structure steady across a whole manuscript rather than losing the thread every few thousand words. Credits meter how much gets generated and the free tier gives enough to see whether the output is worth editing. Projects export to PDF and DOCX for whatever comes next. Anybody who wants a quiet place to write their own words will find the AI here is the product rather than an accessory.
Our note
Spend the free thousand credits on the opening of something you actually intend to write, because whether the voice is usable is the only question and it is answered in a chapter. Anybody generating more than one book will find the unlimited tier cheaper than watching a credit balance, which is the trade Pro is really offering.
